Horror Blood and Whatnot

Hi guys, it’s been a while. Aside from school and my volunteer work the reason for my slight inactivity was due to the fact that I was busy writing the latest chapter for The Warlord’s Prize which I finally finished last night. The chapter was really long but I pushed myself to get it done by last night and succeeded. Also, I finally finished my Zygarde hunt; I’m proud of myself but I feel like the downside to it is I don’t get to see Zygarde’s complete form unless his HP goes below 50%, so the rest of his time is in 50% form. Oh well, that form is pretty cool too so I wouldn’t say that I wasted my time.

Anyway, with Lordi due in two weeks I’m probably going to put my fanfiction on hold until after the gig because God I will have to write about it (and I’m looking forward to it), plus I have another surprise to share, those of you who follow me on Instagram or have me on Facebook may already know what it is!

So, I haven’t written something like this in a while and I never really got around to it. If you know me for starting this blog as all about Lordi in the beginning before it expanded onto countless other topics. I used to talk a lot about things that Lordi was up to and what I thought of it.

Back in the day, I wasn’t really good at providing evidence to support my claims, especially with any differing views I have of Lordi, but over the years I’ve got much better at it. I was inspired to right this after stumbling upon an interview I listened to and read over the week and I think it’s now time I let my thoughts out on this.

Not long before the release of Monstereophonic the band released the single Hug You Hardcore and a music video to accompany it.

For personal reasons, I’m not going to emb the video here, but I will tell you what I think.

When I first heard this song, it sounded rather different than what I was used to Lordi on their aggressive side of their music, especially the riff, but it didn’t take long to grow on me. However, like so many other fans, the issue I had with it was the music video given we get rape and blood in it.

Mr. Lordi talks about how he feels about the fans’ reactions to that video.

The most recent example of this is here

I guess it’s safe to say that I now qualify as a long-time Lordi fan as it’s been about 6 years since I became one, was I shocked to see the video? Yes I was and even though I watched the censored version, I still recognized what was happening.

I understand Mr. Lordi’s desire to get enraged and such to fans’ negative reactions because it makes him think that his fans don’t really know him or the band.

During my obsessive phase with Lordi, I began to realize that there were hidden sexual references in Lordi’s horror element of their songs. For example, Night of the Loving Dead sounded pretty sexual to me. That eventually led to it being inserted into the music videos.

I think the reason why older fans like myself (I never went onto the video’s page to rant because I prefer not to be negative on YouTube) reacted the way we did on the music video, is because we are used to seeing what Lordi has normally done in their music videos: Nostalgia blindness at its finest, but when I’m one to fall under that, I prefer to not be a hater. Instead, I would rather be constructive and respectful as to why I don’t like it if I want to say something.

In a way, I guess I should have expected this was going to happen in a Lordi music video because after what I saw in The Riff which had blood and the chick’s butt even though she wasn’t naked according to the original plan. I wouldn’t say that the music video left me disgusted, disappointed, or angry. I was surprised, but the shock left me shortly when I remembered that this was perhaps their intention after all given the lyrics.

At first I thought HYH was going to be similar to Evilove my favourite bonus track. I realized I was wrong once the music video came out.

It’s not that I’m embarrassed or grossed out by what I saw in the music video, like I said, I sort of saw it coming, but I just personally am not in to seeing that in music videos, no matter the band, the song, or the concept. I know people are going to come at me and think that I have no taste just because I don’t like to see porn with the blood in any sort of music video. Well, if they do that’s their problem.

I consider myself a Lordi fan who has come to sort of accept that this is what Lordi does, but I don’t know, maybe I’m just the type of Lordi fan who enjoys seeing things like the music videos that have stories to them example: It Snows in Hell, and even the 2nd music video for Hard Rock Hallelujah which has almost a horror fantasy element to it.

Other fans are probably going to ask me “How can you be a Lordi fan if you don’t enjoy the gory sex side of them?” There is no ideal way to be a fan of any band. I love Lordi mainly in a musical way. They are the band that influenced me to expand my horizons in rock and metal. I love their image because I like monsters, fantasy, and some scary stuff. But who says I have to enjoy the sexual part of it? I don’t hate it, I just love Lordi in a different way. I love their music, I love their monstrous image, I love monsters in general, I love their personalities in interviews and I’m sure I’ll love that part about them even more when they roll into Toronto.

I’ve come to accept that this is what Lordi does sometimes a few sexual jokes here in there, I don’t hate it when they do it or it’s added to the lyrics or music videos because I recognize that it’s part of what they do. I just prefer to just focus on my love for their music and monster image with some of the horror elements of them even if it is not all of them.

Just one Monstermaniac’s opinion. 😊
